The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) greatly appreciates the efforts of physicians and pharmacists now and throughout these challenging and unprecedented times. We specifically recognize the care your licensees provide their patients, and their selfless devotion towards the protection and promotion of their patients’ health and well-being.

Off-label prescribing refers to the use of pharmaceuticals for medical indications not specifically approved or authorized by the Federal Drug Administration. This practice is commonplace in medicine and, often but not always, done within the context of well-accepted medical guidelines or recommendations. LDH affirms and respects this longstanding practice.

It is the privilege of each physician and pharmacist to remain informed and up to date on current medical practice. LDH will at times communicate nationally accepted best practice recommendations on issues of particular importance. These recommendations, made in service of clinicians and the patients on whom they rely, are not binding nor are they exhaustive. It remains the sole and esteemed role of the licensed practitioner to synthesize all available information and care for their patient in the best and most appropriate manner they see fit, always according to the established standards of, and under the regulation of, their respective licensing board.
